Motherhood is serious business. Most days it can feel all-consuming. By its very nature, being a mom means putting your child’s needs ahead of your own. While that is necessary, it doesn’t mean ignoring or not taking care of your own needs at all. Too many moms push self-care to the wayside, but, the truth is, that does not lead to more effective parenting. Instead, it leads to frustration, aggravation, and burnout. Taking care of yourself is the first step to taking care of your family. Here are four important ways you can put yourself at the top of your own priority list.

  1. Get some rest. Some women can function on two hours of sleep and some of us need a more realistic amount. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep so you aren’t waking up tired because that’s already a deficit before your day even starts.
  2. Figure out what – other than your kids – makes you happy. Treat yourself to an occasional mani and pedi. Wake up early and indulge in a relaxing bath instead of a hurried shower. Another option is to indulge in that relaxing bubble bath in the evening before bed.
  3. Enjoy a once-in-a-while Girl’s Night Out or weekly night out with your spouse/significant other. Make plans to leave your children with a family member, trusted friend, or get a babysitter. Make this a monthly outing because you deserve it!
  4. Get out your calendar and mark off some non-negotiable me time to indulge your creative side. Write poetry, read a book, take a yoga class, meditate, sketch, paint – whatever brings the creative you to the forefront.

And here’s the best tip of all – stop making excuses. Too many moms believe they don’t have time for themselves, when the truth is you have the same 24 hours in each day that everyone else does. Self-care is not only about making time, it’s about making yourself a priority. And, remember this – if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t have the strength, mental clarity, or emotional wellbeing you need to take good, effective care of your family.
